Brookville, N.Y. - - Juniors Anushka Sathe and Tess Paya each earned a point at singles, but Wilmington University dropped the match, 7-2, to host LIU Post University in regional women's tennis action on Friday afternoon.
The Pioneers (1-0), playing their first match of the season, came away with wins at all three doubles matches. The duo of Laura Gil and Mallory Nolte were the closest to taking a point, losing 8-6 at number three doubles, while the pair of Begona Gomar and Tess Paya fell by a score of 8-4 at number two doubles. Sathe and Andrea Ribalta were the last to finish, but fell at number one doubles by an 8-3 margin.
Paya was the first Wildcat to record a point at singles. Playing at number five, the junior won in straight sets, 7-5 and 6-0. Sathe added the Cats' other lone point at number three singles. She won the first set, 6-2 before dropping the second set 6-4. In the tiebreaker, she won handily, 10-2 earning the point for the visitors.
Gil nearly gave Wilmington (1-2) a point, as she went the distance at number two singles but dropped the tiebreaking third set by a 10-6 margin. Freshman Nolte put up a good fight for the Cats, but dropped her match at number six singles by identical 6-4 scores.
Wilmington remains in non-conference play for one more match as they host regional power Queens College next Saturday afternoon, September 16th. First serve is set for 3:30 PM at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
