WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team hung tough against the reigning Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, but crosstown rivals Goldey-Beacom picked up the CACC win, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

Although the Lightning (5-0, 4-0 CACC) won 8-1, they had to work for it as the Wildcats (2-4, 1-1 CACC) went 8-5 in two of the of doubles matches, as well as one three-set singles match, and two set tiebreakers.

Begona Gomar and Tess Paya held a late lead at number two doubles before Goldey-Beacom ran away with it late, 8-5. Laura Gil and Sabrina Blasi-Smith fought back all match at number three doubles, but the Lightning held on for the 8-5 victory as well. Anrea Ribalta and Anushka Sathe also fell at number one singles, 8-2.

Paya was able to get the Wildcats on the board at number five singles, defeating Silvia Hortelano Pey, 7-5 and 6-1. Gomar went the distance against Lotte Lesscher y Post at number one singles, taking the first set in a tiebreak, 7-6 (7-1). But the Lightning freshman fought back to take the second set, 6-4, and the third set tiebreak, 10-4.

Ribalta forced a tiebreak to settle the first set at number four singles, but fell 7-6 (7-5) and 6-1. Laura Gil dropped another point at number two singles, 6-3 and 6-4, while Anushka Sathe fell to East Regional No. 17 Anna Hortelano Pey, 6-3 and 6-1, at number three singles. Blasi-Smith rounded out the scores with a 6-0 and 6-1 loss at number six singles.

The Wildcats remain in CACC action and remain with their tough early season schedule on Saturday, as they head to Post for a 1:00 p.m. first serve. The Eagles knocked the Wildcats out of the CACC Tournament last season in the semifinals.
