NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - A record breaking run to the 2021 ITA East Regional Championship match has landed Wilmington University women's tennis freshman Neus Ramos Moreno as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
The Wildcats were the only team to have four student-athletes advance to the round of 32, and the only team to have three student-athletes advance to the round of 16. Neus Ramos Moreno kept on winning, getting all the way to the championship match before falling.
Neus Ramos Moreno first defeated Post's Alexandra Dereban in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0, and then took down Franklin Pierce's Himari Mor in a third set tiebreaker, 6-2, 2-6 (1-0(12). She then defeated Le Moyne's Fiona Pepper, 6-0 and 6-2, in the round of 16 before defeating Queens' Caroline Fawzy, 6-3, 7-6 (3), to reach the semifinals. In the semifinal round, Le Moyne's Isabella Barona was no match for Ramos Moreno, 6-4 and 6-4, but then the freshman finally fell to Southern New Hampshire's Natalie Kallmunzerova, 6-4 and 6-3, to finish second overall.
She also teamed up with Larize Nel in the doubles draw and won a first round match, defeating a duo from Queens, 8-1, to advance to the Round of 16 as well.
