WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team started its 2024 spring season with a 7-0 sweep of Millersville on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The Wildcats (12-1) swept all three doubles events and then won all six singles matches in straight sets.
Alva Norberg and Marley Trifunovic started the winning at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-1. Jess Purdy and Larize Nel knocked off their opponent at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, at about the same time Gloria Barcaro and Kushi Khandoji won at No. 2 singles by the same score, 6-3.
Gloria Barcaro kept rolling into singles, winning at No. 5 singles, 6-1 and 6-2, before Kushi Khandoji won at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-3, to make it 3-0. Valentina Ivankovic clinched the team victory at No. 4 singles, winning, 6-2 and 6-3.
Alva Norberg kept the shutout intact by dominating the first set tiebreaker, 5-0, to win 7-6 and 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Fenna Swaan won the first set, 6-0, before needing a little extra time to win in straight sets, 7-5. Jess Purdy closed out the shutout with a straight sets win at No. 1, 6-3 and 6-4.
The Wildcats take the short trip down Route 1 for their next match, as they travel to Delaware State on Saturday afternoon. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
