Ryan Sandberg and Brian August Earn Major Awards as Five Wildcats Take Home All-CACC Honors

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Wilmington University baseball team placed five student-athletes on the 2022 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Conference Teams, including the CACC Pitcher of the Year Ryan Sandberg and CACC Coach of the Year Brian August, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.

Ryan Sandberg becomes the sixth Wildcat to earn the CACC Pitcher of the Year award in program history, but the first since the 2013 season. He is joined by Quintin Ivy, John Mead, and Alex Krick as First Team All-CACC honorees while Matt Boyko was named Second Team All-CACC. It is the third time that Brian August has been voted the CACC Coach of the Year in his career.

Ryan Sandberg (Island Park, N.Y./West Hempstead) has been dominating all season long, going 8-2 in 11 starts with a 2.58 earned run average. In 66.1 innings pitched he has racked up 97 strikeouts, just three away from tying the program's record for a single season and becoming the second Wildcat to record 100 strikeouts in a season. He's only walked 15 batters as well, ranking 12th in all of NCAA Division II with a 0.96 WHIP. He is 10th in the NCAA with 13.16 strikeouts per nine innings, ranking 16th overall with his 97 punchouts. He had a season's best 15 strikeouts in a 10-5 win over Jefferson on March 22. He's gone over double digits in five starts this season. It is the second year in a row he's been First Team All-CACC

It is also the second year in a row that Quintin Ivy (Camden, Del./Caesar Rodney) has earned First Team All-CACC accolades and third overall as he was Second Team All-CACC in 2019 and First Team in 2021. Ivy finished the regular season 17th in the CACC with a .336 batting average but second in slugging .727 and second in on-base percentage .483. Of his 37 hits, 20 have gone for extra bases including eight doubles, a triple, and 11 home runs. He is second on the team and 22nd in the league with 31 RBI while second overall with 50 runs scored. His 24 stolen bases are tied for the league lead as well.

John Mead (Washington Township, N.J./Bergen Catholic) has made a splash in his only season with the Wildcats, ranking high in the CACC in all major offensive categories. He leads the CACC with 17 doubles and a .763 slugging percentage this year while ranking third overall with 52 RBI and a .397 batting average. He is also fifth in the CACC with a .465 on-base percentage and seventh overall with nine round-trippers. He has 19 RBI in the last 12 games heading into the postseason.

Alex Krick (Reading, Pa./Muhlenberg) has come on strong down the stretch in the back end of the bullpen for the Wildcats. The true freshman made 15 appearances out of the pen for the Wildcats, going 1-0 with five saves. He only allowed one run in 14.2 innings of work, giving up nine hits as batters are hitting just 1.84 against the righty. He has a 0.61 ERA and has not allowed a run since March 27, spanning nine appearances to close out the year.

Matt Boyko (Westbury, N.Y./W.T. Clarke) went undefeated on the hill for the Wildcats this season to earn his first All-Conference honors. He appeared in nine games, making five starts and went 5-0 with one complete game shutout. In 45 innings pitched, he struck out 33 and walked 11 batter, entering the postseason with a 4.89 ERA. He threw all seven innings of a 4-0 victory at Bloomfield. He struck out four Bears without allowing a walk to earn the win. He has wins over Fairmont State, USciences, Bloomfield, Post, and Goldey-Beacom. His five wins are fourth in the CACC.

Goldey-Beacom's Marshall Awtry was voted the CACC Player of the Year while Chestnut Hill's Connor Evans was voted as the CACC Rookie of the Year. Nyack took home the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award to round out the Major Awards.
