PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A big second quarter allowed Chestnut Hill to pull away from the Wilmington University women's basketball team on Tuesday night, finishing with a 76-48 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory inside Sorgenti Arena.
The Wildcats (0-19, 0-8 CACC) scored the first four points of the game and only trailed the Griffins (11-10, 7-2 CACC) 15-14 after the first quarter. But Chestnut Hill used a 20-0 run in the second quarter to take control. They ultimately won the second quarter, 22-6, to take a 17-point lead into the halftime break.
Jasmine McDuffie scored two from the line to break the ice in the game and then Aniyah Bond hit a jumper for the 4-0 lead. Emma Brown made it a 6-2 lead with a layup and then an 8-4 lead with another jumper. The Wildcats maintained their four-point lead with two free throws from Brown, 10-6, before the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. Armani Bell-Jackson converted a three-point play to tie the contest with 1:26 left in the first. The teams traded free throws to close out the quarter as the Griffins held onto a 15-14 lead.
McDuffie was the first to score in the second quarter as well, putting in a layup to put the Wildcats back in front, 16-15, with 8:02 showing on the clock. But the tides would change against the Wildcats from there, as they would not find the bottom of the net again until 1:20 left in the half. The 20-0 run gave the Griffins a 35-16 lead as they never looked back. Bell-Jackson hit the next two shots for the Wildcats, but the Griffins scored the final bucket of the half to lead 37-20 at the break.
Chestnut Hill outscored the Wildcats in the third quarter, 26-16, to extend the lead even more. The Wildcats scored the first five points of the fourth quarter, but the Griffins settled down and didn't allow the Wildcats to get any closer. The Griffins narrowly won the fourth quarter as well, 13-12, to win the game, 76-48.
Armani Bell-Jackson came off the bench to score a team-high 11 points while Emma Brown added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench as well. Jasmine McDuffie scored nine points to go with eight rebounds. Aniyah Bond scored eight points and added three rebounds. TyKeisha Hill scored five points and led the game with nine rebounds.
The Wildcats return home for their next contest, as they host Post on Saturday afternoon. The CACC tilt is set for a 1:00 p.m. tip at the WU Athletics Complex.
