NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - The Wilmington University athletics department went 11-1 in team sports last week, highlighted by a pair of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
The baseball team is on a 10-game winning streak, with last week being led by Nick Nocella (Mantua, N.J.). He was named the CACC Co-Player of the Week after leading the team with a .615 batting average and eight RBI in a 5-0 week. Nocella went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI in a 15-7 win at Kutztown, 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and six runs scored in a sweep of Bloomfield, and then went 3-for-7 with two RBI in a sweep of Chestnut Hill. Nocella would be second in the CACC with a .406 average but hasn't played in 75 percent of the team's games to make the CACC list.
For the fourth time this season, women's lacrosse freshman Ella Royer (Sherwood Park, Alberta) has been named the CACC Rookie of the Week on Monday. She helped lead the Wildcats to a key victory over Holy Family, 19-12, in their only game last week. She led the team with eight points, scoring four goals while adding four assists. She also controlled six draws, forced four turnovers, and scooped up three ground balls in the win. She was key to the Wildcats' transition game, as the Wildcats went 21-for-26 in clear opportunities.
Other notable names that earned spots on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll were baseball's Matt Warrington for striking out 12 batters in a seven-inning complete game victory; softball's Sara Miller who led the team with seven RBI and a 1.111 slugging percentage in the team's 4-0 week; and men's lacrosse's TJ Caton who scored four goals and had eight ground balls at Georgian Court.
