
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - - The Wilmington University baseball team ended its 2025 opening weekend at The Ripken Experience with a 12-3 loss to Southern Connecticut State on Sunday afternoon on Griffith Field.
The offense was again slow out of the game, with only one hit through the first 4.2 innings. AJ Tropiano put the Wildcats (1-3) on the board with an RBI single in the eighth before Mason DeLuca hit a two-run RBI in the bottom of the ninth.
The Owls (1-3) scored at least one run from the third inning to the eighth inning, with their biggest inning coming in the seventh when they tallied four. They scored one run in the third and fourth innings and then tacked on two more in the fifth. A three-run sixth inning made it 7-0 before the four-run seventh made it 11-0. They added one final run int eh top of the eight to make it a 12-0 lead.
Tristan Schoendienst led off the eighth with a double and then moved over to third on a ground out. AJ Tropiano then hit a one-out RBI single to put the Wildcats on the board. Zach Frame started the ninth with a walk and then Mason DeLuca launched a two-run homer for his first homer of the season.
Brandon Grygo was saddled with the loss after throwing the first 4.1 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend when they travel to the USA Baseball Complex in Cary, North Carolina, for four more games. They start with a doubleheader against Point Park on Friday starting at 12:00 p.m.
