CARY, N.C. - - Garrett Quinn's two-out, two-run single saw the Wilmington University baseball team walk off with a 4-3 comeback victory over D'Youville on Sunday at the USA Baseball Training Complex.
Trailing 2-0 early, the Wildcats (4-4) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game. The Saints (2-6) took the lead again with a run in the top of the ninth, but the Wildcats rallied once again to earn the walk-off victory.
A leadoff walk in the first and a leadoff double in the third came around to score off WilmU starter Steve Schenning, but that was all the damage the Saints could do against the righty-hander. He went five innings with three strikeouts, allowing the two runs on three hits and a walk. Zach Czarnecki, Dom Marotta, and Alex Krick all tossed scoreless innings before a leadoff walk came around to score on a two-out hit off Liam Loging in the ninth.
The offense couldn't get going against Saints' starter Billy Morris until the sixth inning. A single and an error put runners on first and second. Garrett Quinn hit an RBI single to put the Wildcats on the board, but Morris left two runners on to get out of the inning.
Brandon Grygo hit a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh but was still standing at second with two outs. Josearmando Diaz tied the game with a two-out RBI double, ending Morris' afternoon.
Double plays ended each half of the eighth inning and then the Saints hit a two-out double in the top of the ninth to take the lead.
Kory Pritchard started the ninth with a single before moving to third on a bunt fielder's choice and an error. An intentional walk loaded the bases with no outs, but the Saints picked up an infield fly and a strikeout to nearly get out of the inning. But Garrett Quinn came through with a right into right center, scoring two to walk off with the win.
Quinn finished 3-for-5 with three RBI while D'Angelo Ponce went 3-for-5 as well. Brandon Grygo and Kory Pritchard had two hits each for the Wildcats. Liam Login earned his first victory as a Wildcat.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, making another trip to the USA Baseball Training Center in Cary, North Carolina. They start with Adelphi on Friday at 12:00 p.m.
