NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The Wilmington University baseball team started its 2025 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference journey with a pair of victories over Bridgeport, 4-1 and 8-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
GAME 1:
Scott Borgmann gave the Wildcats (10-7, 2-0 CACC) a quality start, going seven innings while striking out seven and only giving up a run on two hits and three walks. He turned it over to Alex Krick for the eighth and Dom Marotta for the eighth, both throwing shutout innings to securing the victory.
All the runs came early for the Wildcats, getting three runs in the first two at bats. Tristan Schoendienst started a two-out rally in the first with a single. Josearmando Diaz then doubled to the gap in left center, allowing Schoendienst to score the opening run. The Wildcats loaded the bases but couldn't get any more in the first.
Garrett Quinn started the second with a single but was standing on third with two outs. Kory Pritchard came through with a two-strike single, giving the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Wild pitches moved Pritchard to third and then Schoendienst's hard liner to left was dropped, allowing another run to score for the 3-0 lead.
The Purple Knights loaded the bases with no outs in the third, but Borgmann induced a double play that allowed a run and a picked up a strikeout to avoid any more damage.
AJ Tropiano hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth for an insurance run, 4-1.
Alex Krick allowed a leadoff single in the third but still faced the minimum with a pick off. Dom Marotta allowed a leadoff single in the ninth but left the runner on third with a strikeout to end the game for his first save of the season.
GAME 2:
Bridgeport struck with two in the top of the first, but the Wildcats answered back. Bridgeport then tied the game, 5-5, in the fifth before the Wildcats answered with two in the home half of the fifth and another in the sixth for the CACC sweep.
Chase Fleming cut the Wildcats' deficit in half in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single to score Brandon Grygo who doubled. Zach Frame then gave the Wildcats the lead with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the second, 3-2. Cam Trego and Kyle Lowman hit two-out RBI singles in the bottom of the third and the Wildcats opened up a 5-2 lead.
The Purple Knights got back into it in the fifth, hitting a couple doubles to score a pair of unearned runs. A two-out single made tied the game, 5-5, before the Wildcats' Yoshi Conti got out of the jam.
Cam Trego walked with two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the fifth, sparking a rally. Kyle Lowman reached on an error and then another error brought in the go-ahead run. Grygo made them pay with another RBI single for the 7-5 lead. AJ Tropiano hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth for an insurance run, 8-5.
Zack Czarnecki left a runner on in the sixth and then struck out the final two batters of the seventh for his first career save. Steve Schenning struck out seven in 4.2 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on six hits. Conti picks up the win after getting out of the fifth inning.
Brandon Grygo led the offense with three hits in game two while Kyle Lowman had two hits.

The Wildcats have four game against Chestnut Hill this weekend, first with a doubleheader on the road on Saturday. The first game against the Griffins will be the Bill Giles Invitational matchup, with an expected first pitch set for 12:00 p.m. at Hostelley Field in North Wales, Pa.
