Wilmington Golf Places Ninth at St. Edward’s Invitational in First Action of 2015 Spring Season

The 2015 spring golf schedule started a day later than expected as the first day of the St. Edward's Invitational was postponed on Monday, but the Wilmington University golf team came out on Tuesday and finished ninth overall in the final round at Onion Creek Golf Club.

Junior Andreas Lunding led the Wildcats on Tuesday, finishing at even par (70) and in a tie for ninth overall. The Wildcats shot a 296 (+16) as a team, finishing behind Newman, Cameron, and California Baptist who all finished in a tie for sixth with a 294, and ahead of West Texas A&M who shot a 299.

Southeast power Nova Southeastern won the tournament on Tuesday, shooting a 272 (-8) to finishing six strokes ahead of Rogers State University. St. Mary's (Texas) Jono Ledger defeated Nova Southeastern's Richard Mansell on the third playoff hole, making a seven-foot birdie putt to win the tournament.

Wildcat freshman Joey Russo finished in a tie for 27th overall and second on the team with a 73 (+3) while sophomore Freddy Braun finished in a tie for 54th overall with a 76 (+6). Junior Jordan Lamb was the final scorer for the Wildcats, placing in a tie for 64th overall with a 77 (+7). Senior Alexander Lautenschlaeger was also on the scorecard for the Wildcats, shooting a 78 (+8), finishing in a tie for 69th overall but did not factor into the overall team's score.

Sophomore Sam Clark, playing as an individual, shot an 80 (+10) to finish in a tie for 75th overall, rounding out the Wildcats in the St. Edward's Invitational.

Russo tied for the round lead by shooting two-under par on the five Par-3 holes while Lunding finished tied for 10th by shooting one-under par on the three Par-5 holes. Lunding and Braun totaled 14 pars while Russo added 13 pars in the round.

The Wildcats are back in action on Monday, March 23 when they square off against regional competition at the Goldey-Beacom College Spring Invite. The one-day tournament will be held at Deerfield Golf Club in Newark, Del.
