BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - - The Wilmington University golf team shot rounds of 318-315-323 for a 956, finishing in 13th place at The Griffin Invitational hosted by Saint Leo University at the Southern Hills Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
West Florida won the tournament with a three-round score of 848 (-16) while Barry came in second with an 854 (-10). Nova Southeastern was the final team under par for the tournament, finishing third with a three-round score of 860 (-4).
Sophomore Pablo Quintero led the Wildcats by tying for 72nd overall, shooting rounds of 81-74-83 for a 238 (+22). He had four birdies in the tournament, and had a second round full of 15 pars.
Sophomore Blake Ramirez finished in 76th with rounds of 81-78-81 for a 240 (+24). He finished the tournament with two birdies and had a second round that featured 13 pars.
Tyler Cleaves finished 78th overall with a 242 (+26), shooting rounds of 82-81-79. His one birdie came in the third round on the par five fifth hole.
Jan Lekes finished 89th overall with rounds of 89-82-83 for a 254 (+38). His lone birdie came in the third round, as he sank a putt on his third shot on the par four 10th.
Matthew Pulgini shot a 74 (+2) in the first round, but then could not finish the second round due to medical reasons, pulling his name off of the leaderboard. He came back and battled in the third round, shooting an 80 to finish two rounds at 154 (+10).
Barry's A.J. Ewart won the tournament by five strokes over the West Florida pair of Felipe Garces Garzon and Elias Haavisto and Nova Southeastern's Michael Hay. Ewart shot rounds of 66-70-69 for a 205 (-11) while the trio shot 210's (-6).
The Wildcats return north to compete in the Penmen Invitational hosted by Southern New Hampshire at the end of the month. The first two rounds are scheduled for Monday, September 26, with the third and final round on Tuesday, September 27 at the Beaver Meadow Golf Course in Concord, New Hampshire.
