First Inning Unearned Runs Haunt Wilmington Softball in 2-1 Loss to Southern Connecticut State

A pair of unearned runs allowed Southern Connecticut State to slip past the Wilmington University softball team, 2-1, as the Wildcats finished out their annual trip to Florida on Thursday morning at the National Training Center.

A late game comeback fell short as the Wildcats (7-5) stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the top of the seventh, ending their 13 game stay in Florida with four straight losses. The first game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to rain in the area overnight.

Chelsea Botsch tossed a complete game, giving up the two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning before shutting down the Owls (2-1). Botsch gave up singles in the first and second innings before not allowing a hit for the rest of the game. She struck out five batters while only allowing two walks in the tough luck loss.

The offense left four runners on base in the game, two of which came in the top of the seventh. The Wildcats also left a runner on in the top of the first following a lead off single by Kelsey Doherty and a two out walk in the fourth to Rice Fazio.

Colby Wyatt led the off the top of the seventh with a double to left field, but was left there as the Owls recorded a pair of outs. Monique Rojas singled back up the middle with two down, scoring Wyatt from second to cut the deficit in half. With runners on first and second, Owls' pitcher Kelsey Cockrill induced a game ending pop up to thwart the threat.

Doherty, Wyatt, Becca Stanley, and Rojas collected one hit each for the Wildcats but Cockrill, who collected eight strikeouts in the complete game, shut them down.

The Wildcats were scheduled to return home and open their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference slate at Felician on Sunday, but the doubleheader has been postponed. The Wildcats will now host No. 10 West Chester in doubleheader in their home opener on Tuesday at Asbury Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
