Women Set School Record in 4x100 Relay as Both Wildcat Track and Field Teams Finish 8th at Rider Invite

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - - The Wilmington University track and field teams continued their 2024 season by each earning 26 points and finishing in eighth place at the Rider Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Michael P. Brady Track & Field Complex.

The men finished 8th out of 19 scoring teams with 26 points while the women finished 8th out of 16 scoring teams with 26 points. Each side had a number of season bests in multiple events.

On the men's side, the Wildcats earned points in seven events, including three relay teams. Tyler Levons ran the 200-meter even in 22.03 to finish fourth, bringing in five points. Juan Fountain ran a new season's best in the 400-meter race, finishing third overall in 49.53 for six points. Trent Taylor set a new season best for himself in the 5,000-meter event, finishing in eighth place with a time of 15:20.51 for one point.

The 4x100-meter relay team of Matthew Hibbert, Sage Phillips, Juan Fountain, and Tyler Levons finished fourth overall with a time of 42.18 for five team points. Dallas Parker then joined Phillips, Fountain, and Levons for the 4x400-meter relay, running to a fifth-place finish in 3:39.42 for four more points. Competing in the 4x800-meter relay for the first time this season, the combination of Daniel Wyshinski, Carter Sparwasser, Jared Cushlanis, and Joel Oquendo finished fifth overall in a time of 8::44.08 for four more points.

Over in the field events, Christian Dollard rounded out the Wilmington points with an eighth-place finish in the discus, finishing with a best toss of 39.23 meters.

Other notable finishes for the men were Bradley Spencer setting new season's bests in the 100, 200, and 400 races while Sparwasser, Oquendo, Hayward Boutte, Joe Volk, and Cushlanis all had season bests in the 5,000-meter distance. Christian Dollard set a new team best distance for the season in the shot put ring, finishing ninth with a distance of 12.56 meters. Samuel Distler set new season bests in the shot put and hammer while Braeden Peterson set a new season best in the javelin.

On the women's side, the Wildcats scored 26 points in six events, highlighted by a school record in the 4x100-meter relay. Temi Mustapha picked up five points by finishing fourth overall in the 100-meter race, finishing in 12.63 seconds. Eliza Hildreth continues to dominate the 200 and 400 meter distances, finishing fifth overall in the 200-meter in a wind-aided time of 25.75 for four points and a sixth-place finish in the 400-meter with a season's best time of 1:00.77 for 3 more points.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Deja Curry, Mustapha, Angie Chomo, and Hildreth set a new school record with a time of 49.69 to finish third overall for six team points. The previous record was set at the 2023 Hopkins Loyola Invitational with a time of 50.07 seconds.

The 4x800 meter relay team competed for the first time this season as the combination of Tiffany Banning, Sammy Banning, Claudia Rodriguez, and Cassidy Burr finished fourth overall for five points with a time of 11:34.66.

Temi Mustapha finished off the team scoring in the triple jump, setting what would be a new season's best but the wind was too strong. She jumped to a sixth-place finish with a distance of 10.90 meters for three team points.

Other notable marks for the women on Saturday were season-bests for Cassidy Burr and Abigail Chomo in the 5,000-meter and the season-best distance for Leeah Eisenhower in the javelin.

The Wildcats have one final regular season tune-up before the 2024 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Championships, as they head to the famed Penn Relays on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.
