Wildcats Open 2023-24 Season With Loss to New Haven

WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's basketball team dropped its 2023-24 season opener, 81-21, to New Haven on Friday night, hosted by Goldey-Beacom at the Joseph West Jones Center.

The Chargers (1-0) shot 60 percent from the floor for the game, including shooting 6-of-8 from distance. They also held the Wildcats (0-1) to shooting just 16.7 percent from the floor for the game, including 1-of-18 from three-point distance. New Haven also collected 14 steals on 23 Wilmington turnovers.

The Wildcats closed the deficit to within 3-2 with a pair of free throws from Amber Washington, but then the Chargers rattled off six consecutive points in route to a 10-2 run. The Chargers had a double-double lead, 15-4, and never looked back. Cha'Nyah Dunston-Mason recorded the first field goal of the season for the Wildcats, bringing the Wildcats to within 19-6 to close out the first quarter.

The Chargers shot 13-for-16 in the second quarter, hitting all four three-pointers in the quarter. They scored 31 points in the frame to take a 50-13 lead into the halftime break.

Amber Washington led the Wildcats with five points while adding four rebounds. Cha'Nyah Dunston-Mason and Aniyah Bond each scored four points in the game with Bond adding five rebounds. Trinity Brittingham came off the bench with three points and a team high six rebounds.

The Wildcats are right back in action on Saturday afternoon, as they play the University of the District of Columbia again at Goldey-Beacom. The opening tip is set for 3:00 p.m.
