BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - A strong first half carried Bridgeport to an 88-43 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory over the Wilmington University women's basketball on Saturday afternoon inside Hubbell Gymnasium.
The Purple Knights (2-14, 2-2 CACC) scored 50 of their 88 points in the first half, including a 30-point second quarter to stretch the halftime lead. The Wildcats (0-14, 0-3 CACC) shot 30.9 percent from the floor but just 2-for-14 from long range.
Jasmine McDuffie made the first three-pointer attempted in the day for the Wildcats, tying the game at 3-3. McDuffie then put in a layup to give the Wildcats their lone lead of the afternoon, 5-3, with 6:45 to play in the first quarter. McDuffie made the tail end of a pair at the line to make it 6-6 with 5:38 to play but that would be the last point for the quarter for the Wildcats. The Purple Knights closed the quarter on a 14-0 run, taking a 20-6 lead into the second quarter. The run continued into the second quarter, as the Purple Knights took a 24-6 lead before Emma Brown put in a layup for the Wildcats to end the drought. Bridgeport shot 58.8 percent from the floor in the second quarter, scoring 30 points to take a 50-17 lead into the break.
Emma Brown scored five of her team high nine points in the first half, shooting 4-for-7 from the floor. Daja Claiborne and Jasmine McDuffie scored eight points to go with five rebounds each. Claiborne shot 4-for-9 from the floor and dished out an assist and added a steal. McDuffie added a block in the game. Tianna Neal tied the team high with five rebounds off the bench as well.
The Wildcats return home for their next contest, as they welcome Jefferson to the WU Athletics Complex on Tuesday night. The Wildcats and Rams are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
