
NEWARK, Del. - - A pair of Wilmington University lacrosse student-athletes are playing on the world stage this September, as women's lacrosse's Ella Royer and men's lacrosse's Toby Templeton are competing for their respective countries at the 2024 World Lacrosse Box Championships in Utica, New York.
Ella Royer (Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada) earned a spot on the Canadian Women's Box Lacrosse National Team which is competing in the inaugural World Lacrosse Women's Box Championships. Royer is a record setting midfielder for the Wildcats, accumulating over 200 points in just two seasons on the turf for Wilmington. She was the CACC Player of the Year in 2024, scoring 86 goals while adding 22 assists for 108 points. Royer gets it done in the classroom as well, sporting a 3.70 GPA and was named to the CACC All-Academic Team and to the CSC Academic All-District Team.
Canada is one of the favorites to win the inaugural Women's Box Lacrosse World Championships. Royer is one of 23 individuals named to the Canadian National Team. She will compete against Australia, Germany, Finland, and Ireland. Six of the ten teams advance directly to the playoffs after pool play. The tournament runs from September 20-29.
Toby Templeton (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia) earned a spot on the Australian Men's Box Lacrosse National Team which is also competing in Utica, New York from September 20-29. Templeton is an incoming freshman to the men's lacrosse team at Wilmington and listed as a defender and face-off specialist on the Australian team's roster. He helped lead the Victorian Men's Box U 18 and National Team to National Championships in 2023, as well at a runner-up finish in 2024.
Australia has fared well at previous World Box Lacrosse Championships and is a favorite to get out of Pool Play. He will be one of the youngest men on the Aussie roster, which has finished in the top 10 in each edition of the men's world championship. They will compete in Pool F against Slovakia, Hungary, and Puerto Rico. There are 28 teams (7 pools) competing, and eight teams will advance directly to the playoffs after pool play.
