Alea Javorowsky Scores With 7.6 Seconds Left to Give Wildcats a 13-12 Win Over Bloomsburg

NEWARK, Del. - - Alea Javorowsky slammed a one-time touch pass into the back of the net with seven seconds on the scoreboard, sending the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 nonconference victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.

A strong first half saw the Wildcats (4-3) jump out to as large as a 7-3 lead. Bloomsburg (4-4) put runs together to get back into the contest in the second half, tying the game at 9-9, and again at 12-12 with less than a minute to play in the fourth quarter.

After falling behind, 1-0, the Wildcats scored three goals in 1:19 of game time, quickly taking a 3-1 lead. After the Huskies scored to cut the deficit in half, Ella Royer and Eden Ward scored again in the first quarter to put the Wildcats up, 5-2. But Bloomsburg had the final say of the quarter, scoring on the man-down opportunity to make it 5-3.

Ella Royer and Eden Ward scored again to start eh second quarter, as Ward put one in just 28 seconds after Royer to take a 7-3 lead with 11:00 left on the clock. Bloomsburg cut into the deficit with two goals as the Wildcats went into the halftime break leading 7-5.

Bloomsburg scored the first goal of the third quarter but then Michaella Cook and Eden Ward scored just 27 seconds apart to give the Wildcats come space again, 9-6. But the Huskies answered with three straight of their own, tying the game, 9-9, with 3:16 to play in the third. Ella Royer ended the Husky run with a goal, sending the Wildcats into the fourth with a 10-9 lead.

Anastasia Giannoulis scored on the man-advantage with 12:36 to play and then Mia Schultz gave the Wildcats a 12-9 lead with 6:49 to play. But the Huskies didn't roll over, answering with goals with 4:59 to play and 4:05 to play to cut the game to one, 12-11. The Wildcats missed a free-position attempt with 1:48 to play and Bloomsburg came down and scored to tie the game, 12-12, with 49 seconds remaining.

Ella Royer chased down the ensuing draw control for the Wildcats. A foul behind the cage allowed Gia Boccio some space as the clock was winding down. On the restart, she found a cutting Javorowsky in front of the net and she redirected the pass into the back of the net with 7.6 seconds to play.

Ella Royer led the Wildcats with five goals, two assists, five draws, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Eden Ward finished with three goals, two assists, three draws, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers. Alea Javorowsky had two goals and an assist while Michaella Cook had a goal and two assists. Caitlyn Welker added five draws while Sophie Shive chipped in with two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Ashleigh Lawry made 11 saves in goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats have one more nonconference game prior to conference play next Saturday. They host Frostburg State on Tuesday afternoon with the opening draw set for 3:00 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
