WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team dropped its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener, 7-2, to crosstown rival Goldey-Beacom on Wednesday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats' (1-2, 0-1 CACC) first experience in the CACC came against one of the preseason favorite in Goldey-Beacom (2-0, 2-0 CACC). Despite close matches throughout, the Wildcats could only muster one doubles match and one singles match on the afternoon.

Sophomore Anushka Sathe teamed up with freshman Milica Knezevic once again to win at number two doubles to start the afternoon. The duo only surrendered three games, winning 8-3. Freshmen Begona Gomar and Laura Gil played a close match at number one doubles, but fell just short, 8-6. Freshmen Sabrina Blasi-Smith and Dorotea Rankovic closed out the doubles by falling, 8-1, at number three.

Gil continued to play well in singles following the close doubles match, coming out strong and taking the first set at number three singles, 6-0. She gave the Wildcats another point by finishing off her opponent, 6-3, in the second set.

Sathe stretched the opening set at number one singles to an extra game, but couldn't overcome Lea Schmuecker in falling 7-5 and 6-1. Gomar also played a close set to begin her match at number two singles, but fell to Anna Hortelano Pey, 6-4 and 6-3.

Rankovic battled at number six singles, but fell, 6-3 and 6-3, while Knezevic couldn't continue her momentum from winning doubles and fell, 6-2 and 6-3, at number five singles. Blasi-Smith rounded out the Wildcats at number four singles, falling 6-1 and 6-1.

Saturday's match at Queens College has already been postponed, so after three matches in five days to open the season, the Wildcats won't return to action until Tuesday, September 20 at the University of the Sciences. The opening serve is schedule for 3:00 p.m. in Philadelphia.
