Singles Carry No. 26 Women’s Tennis to 6-3 Victory over TCNJ

EWING, N.J. - - Larize Nel won a pair of matches to lead the No. 26 Wilmington University women's tennis team to a 6-3 victory over NCAA Division III power The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) on Wednesday at the TCNJ Rec Center.

The Wildcats (12-2) dropped two of the three doubles matches on Wednesday, but bounced back and won five of the six singles matches to claim the nonconference victory. The Lions are ranked No. 39 in the ITA Division III National Poll.

Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan put the Wildcats on the board with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles. The Lions won the other two doubles matches by identical scores of 8-6 to lead 2-1.

The Lions jumped in front, 3-1, with a win at No. 1 singles, but then the Wildcats battled back. Valentine Ivankovic started the run with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Begona Gomar followed that with a win at No. 4, 6-2 and 6-4, to tie the match, 3-3.

Neus Ramos Moreno got back in the win column with a win at No. 2 singles, 7-5 an 6-3, before Larize Nel sealed the match with a win at No. 5, 6-2 and 6-2. Marley Trifunovic capped the victory with one final win at No. 6 singles, winning 7-6 (10-8) and 6-0, to end the match, 6-3.

The Wildcats get back into Regional actual this weekend, as they travel to New Haven and Adelphi for back-to-back matches. They start with the Chargers on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
