WILMINGTON, Del. - - It came down to the last match of the day, but the Wilmington University women's tennis team fought back to defeat Goldey-Beacom, 4-3, to sweep the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference series on Saturday afternoon at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
After losing the doubles point to the Lightning, the Wildcats needed four singles victories to clinch the match, and it came down to the last match standing. Molly Carlberg clinched the victory at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 3-6, and 6-1, to keep the Wildcats undefeated, 6-0, this season.
Ming-Fu Chen and Gloria Barcaro started the doubles play with a win at No. 3, 6-2, but then the Lightning fought back and won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the point.
Kushi Khandoji started singles play with a win at No. 4, 61 and 6-2 to remain undefeated in solo competition. Ming-Fu Chen put the Wildcats ahead, 2-1, with a win at No. 6 singles, 6-2 and 6-2.
The Lightning tied the match, 2-2, with a win at No. 2 singles, but then Liza Sylka put the Wildcats one win away from the match with a win at No.3 singles, 6-3 and 6-4. Goldey-Beacom forced the decision to go to the final match however, winning at No. 5 singles to even the match, 3-3.
Molly Carlberg won the first set, 6-1, but Elizabeth Mova forced a third set with a 6-3 win in the second. Carlberg closed out the match, and the team victory, with a 6-1 victory in the third set, finishing the sweep against the Lightning.
The Wildcats have three home matches next week, starting with a match against Post on Monday afternoon. The first serve against the Eagles is et for 2:00 p.m. at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
