WILMINGTON, Del. - - For the fourth year in a row, the Wilmington University women's tennis team claim the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season Championship, coming back to defeat Jefferson, 4-3, on Saturday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The win puts the Wildcats at 9-0 in conference play with one match remaining. With Chestnut Hill falling to Goldey-Beacom on Saturday, the Griffins are now two losses behind the Wildcats. The two will meet up on Tuesday in Wilmington's regular season finale. Both have earned spots in the upcoming CACC Tournament next weekend.
On Saturday, the Wildcats needed to mount a comeback against Jefferson, dropping the double's point for the third time this season. Siana MacDonald and Kushi Khandoji won at No. 3, 6-3, to start the match, but then Jefferson claimed identical 6-4 matches at No. 2 and No. 1 to earn the point.
But the Wildcats pounced right away, winning the first four singles matches to claim the match. Gloria Barcaro started the scoring with a 6-0 and 6-1 victory at No. 6 while Kushi Khandoji remained unbeaten in singles play with a win at No. 5, 6-0 and 6-2. Siana MacDonald made it a 3-1 contest with a win at No. 1 singles, 6-4 and 6-0, and then Liza Sylka made it four matches in a row with a win at No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-1, clinching the team victory, 4-1.
The Rams won the final two singles matches at No. 2 and No. 4, but the Wildcats took the match, 4-3, and ultimately the CACC Regular Season Title.
The Wildcats travel to Chestnut Hill for their final regular season game of the 2024 season. They will battle on Tuesday, October 15, starting at 2:00 p.m.
