Wilmington’s Janney, DeLong, Samluk Headline the CACC Baseball Weekly Report

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Nearly sweeping the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Weekly Awards, the Wilmington University baseball team put three members on the weekly report including Player of the Week BJ Janney and Rookie of the Week Frank Samluk while Justin DeLong was named Co-Pitcher of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.

Wilmington 1-1 in its final week of regular season action, falling to NCAA Division I member University of Delaware but defeated Philadelphia in the CACC finale to secure the number two spot and a first round bye in the upcoming CACC Tournament. Four teams square off today with the winners to enter the double-elimination portion of the tournament starting on Thursday at Wilson Field.

Janney (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun) earns his first CACC Player of the Week honors of the season and second of his career after hitting .600 (6-for-10) including a pair of doubles, three runs score and two RBI. He posted a .800 slugging percentage while reaching base 63.6 percent of the time.

The junior's weeks started with a 2-for-4 performance at Delaware, hitting a third inning double to right field, scoring a run to tie the game at 1-1 in the early going. The next day, he batted 4-for-6 with a ninth inning RBI double following three singles in the game.

DeLong (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) pitched in only one game this week, but it was a must win for the Wildcats. The sophomore threw 7.2 innings against Philadelphia, allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits while accumulating nine strikeouts along the way. He improved to a team best 7-2 with the win and helped the team receive a bye in the first round.

Samluk (Middletown, Del./St. Elizabeth's) batted 3-for-7 (.429) with a double and three RBI's while starting both games last week. He also slugged .571 and reached base 55.6 percent of the time this week. Samluk went 1-for-1 on the base paths.

The freshman hit a fourth inning single at Delaware while starting at first base before hitting 2-for-4 with a first inning RBI double against Philadelphia. Samluk followed that up with an RBI single up the middle in the third and capped his week with an RBI fielder's choice in the sixth. It is the second time this year Samluk has earned the CACC Rookie of the Week award.

The Wildcats return to action on Thursday in the double-elimination portion of the CACC Tournament at Wilson Field. Wilmington awaits the winner of the Caldwell/Dominican game being played Tuesday at Dominican starting at 3 p.m. The game on Thursday is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., following the first game of the day at 12:00 p.m.
