Pablo Quintero Leads Golfers to Fourth Place Finish at the Battle at Brunswick

CALABASH, N.C. - - Beginning its 2023 spring schedule, the Wilmington University golf team finished fourth at the Davis & Elkins Battle at Brunswick over the weekend, shooting identical scores of 312-312 for a 624 (+48), held at the Brunswick Plantation Resort and Golf.

The Wildcats are vying for a bid to the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Super Regional Tournament at the end of the year, and among the 14 teams in attendance this weekend, the Wildcats were the second regional team in the standings behind only host Davis & Elkins.

Wilmington was led by Pablo Quintero who finished tied for eighth overall. He shot a 77 on Saturday but then moved up nine spots with a 73 on Sunday, finishing with a 150 (+6). Quintero finished tied for third in the tournament on par five scoring, shooting three-under par in the two rounds for a 4.63 strokes average. He also led the Wildcats and was tied for fifth in the tournament with 23 pars in the two rounds. He tied for the team lead and tied for eighth overall with five birdies.

Nathan Potts finished in a tie for 24th overall, shooting rounds of 76-80 for a 156 (+12). Potts was two-over on par three scoring and six-over on par four scoring, ranking in the Top 22 for the tournament.

Matthew Pulgini finished a stroke behind Potts with a 157 (+13), but five spots behind him on the leaderboard tied for 29th. Pulgini shot rounds of 81-76 for his 157. Pulgini tied Quintero in eighth with five birdies in the two rounds and tied Potts at two-over par on the Top 22 list on par three scoring.

Tyler Cleaves posted rounds of 78-83 for a 161 (+17), finishing in a tie for 46th overall. Jan Lekes closed out the team scoring on Sunday with back-to-back rounds of 83 for a 166 (+22). Lekes finished in a tie for 62nd overall.

Rounding out the Wildcats on the course was Blake Ramirez, playing as an individual. He posted rounds of 81-82 for a 163 (+19), finishing in a tie for 51st overall.

Davis & Elkins won the tournament with rounds of 300-293 for a 593 (+17) followed by Wayne State (Mich.) with a 594 (+18) and Emory and Henry College in third with a 609 (+33). Davis & Elkins' Jordan Hyland won the tournament with rounds of 70-72 for a 142 (-2), winning by three strokes.

The Wildcats head back down to North Carolina for the J. Ralph Hargett Invitational start on Monday, March 20. The tournament, hosted by Wingate, will be held at the Rolling Hills Country Club in Monroe, North Carolina.
