
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - - A 5-0 run in the second quarter allowed the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team to come back and defeat Bridgeport, 17-10, on Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action at Knights Field.
Trailing 4-3 with 13:03 to play in the second quarter, the Wildcats (6-4, 2-1 CACC) rattled off five straight goals to take command of the contest. Tristan Holdsworth's third goal of the game started the run, as Mia Schultz, Ella Royer, Gia Boccio, and Royer again put the Wildcats in front, 8-4, with 2:50 to play in the half.
Bridgeport scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter to close the gap to within 11-8, but then the Wildcats finished the quarter on a 4-1 run, grabbing a 15-9 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Purple Knights scored the first goal of the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats slowed things down, keeping Bridgeport off the board the rest of the way. Michaella Cook and Tristan Holdsworth score off free position shots in the fourth quarter, settling on the final score, of 17-10.
Tristan Holdsworth led the Wildcats with six goals and an assist while Ella Royer added five goals and an assist, contributing seven draws, four caused turnovers, and two ground balls. Alea Javorowsky had a goal and five assists while Anastasia Giannoulis finished with two goals. Sophie Shive finished with four caused turnovers and two assists to lead the defensive unit.
Allison Schiavone made seven saves in the first half before giving way to Ashleigh Lawry who made five stops in the second half.
The Wildcats return home for their next contest, squaring off against Chestnut Hill on Tuesday afternoon. The opening draw against the Griffins is set for 4:00 p.m.
