No. 18 Jefferson Sweeps Baseball to Take CACC Series, 3-1

NEW CASTLE, Del. - - The 18th ranked Jefferson Rams scored 29 runs in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep over the Wilmington University baseball team, 13-2 and 16-2, on Sunday at Wilson Field.

GAME 1:

Jefferson did all the scoring in three innings in the opener on Sunday, scoring six runs in the top of the second, four in the top of the fifth, and three more in the top of the ninth.

D'Angelo Ponce put the Wildcats on the board first though, rounding the bases himself for the early 1-0 lead. He hit a one-out single, stole second, stolen third, and scored on an error by the catcher on the throw to third.

The Rams scored six runs on three hits and an error in the top of the second to take the lead. Josearmando Diaz hit a single through the left side on a hit and run in the bottom of the third and the ball got past the left fielder. Tyler Pirrung scored on the play, but Diaz was thrown out at third for the second out and erasing all the base runners.

A two-run homer highlighted the top of the fifth for the Rams as they scored four runs on three hits and an error. To take a 10-2 lead. Ram starter Danny Kerr set 15 straight Wildcats down from the end of the 3rd inning to the bottom of the 8th inning, when Pirrung reached on a hit by pitch. He then closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning in the ninth for a complete game victory.

D'Angelo Ponce, Tristan Schoendienst and Josearmando Diaz had the three hits for the Wildcats, with Ponce and Pirrung finishing with two stolen bases each.

Liam Login threw three scoreless innings of relief for the Wildcats.

GAME 2:

Big innings again allowed the Rams to take control of the nightcap, scoring five runs in the second, two each in the third and fifth innings, and then added seven runs in the top of the seventh to put the game away.

The Rams scored five runs on five hits in the top of the second, with a three-run homer being the big hit. A leadoff homer in the top of the third made it 6-0and then a two-out single up the middle plated another for the 7-0 lead in the third inning.

Josearmando Diaz blasted a two-run homer to right in the bottom of the fourth, but the Rams got it right back in the top of the fifth with two runs on two hits. The Rams then put the game away in the seventh with seven runs on three hits and three Wilmington errors.

Zach Frame went 2-for-3 with a double for the Wildcats while Kory Pritchard, Diaz, and CJ Nocella all had hits as well. John McCallister tossed a scoreless inning of relief for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats head to Post on Tuesday to continue CACC play. The doubleheader is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. in Waterbury, Connecticut.
