Wilmington Softball Hits its Way to Sweep in Florida over Assumption and Lewis

The bats continue to be hot for the Wilmington University softball team as they swept a pair of games on Friday morning, collecting 26 total hits in defeating Assumption, 16-8, and Lewis, 7-6, at the Hancock Park.

The Wildcats (3-1) has 17 hits against Assumption and defeated the Greyhounds after breaking a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the third before tacking on nine runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Wildcats needed a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh to fend off Lewis in the days' nightcap, collecting nine hits and using a two-run double by Colby Wyatt to finish off the sweep.

Wilmington jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first two innings in game one, getting a solo shot from Becca Stanley and a two-run homer from Cambria Ziemba in the second.

Assumption tied the game with a five spot in the third, getting four hits and being aided by a Wildcat error. The Greyhounds received three home runs in the inning with back-to-back jacks ending starter Chelsea Botsch's game.

Stanley knocked in Danielle Brantley before Stanley came around to score on a Brooke Lachette single up the middle, making it 7-5 after three innings.

Kelsey Doherty induced the most damage in the fourth, smacking ground slam to center field. Miranda Pedersen continued her torrid start with a two-run shot to center, scoring Ziemba. In all, the Wildcats scored nine runs on seven hits in the fourth.

The Wildcats again jumped out to an early lead in the day's second game against Lewis. Doherty brought in a pair with a single in the second as Wilmington jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Lewis tied the game with a pair of runs on three hits in the fourth, but Lachette stranded a pair in the fourth before shutting down the Flyers in order in the fifth.

The Flyers took the lead with two runs in the sixth however, before taking another 6-5 lead with a single run in the top of the seventh.

Back-to-back singles from Ziemba and Pedersen to lead off the bottom of the seventh had the Wildcats in action. Stanley walked to load the bases with no outs before Wyatt came through with a double to the gap in left center, bringing in the tying and game-winning runs with one out.

Lachette picked up the win against Assumption in 2.2 innings of relief while Brantley earned her first collegiate career victory against Lewis in 1.2 innings of relief.

Doherty batted 5-for-8 with seven RBI on the day while Ziemba went 4-for-7 with four runs scored on the day. Pedersen hit her third home run of the season and batted 4-for-5 with three RBI and four runs scored.

The Wildcats continue their Florida Trip on Saturday with games against Mercy and Minnesota State Mankato at the National Training Center.
