NEWARK, Del. - - As another season officially earlier began this week for head coach Mike Shehorn and the Wilmington University softball team, a final reminder of their record-breaking 2024 season popped up as they were named the 2024 Delaware Team of the Year by the Delaware Sportswriters and Broadcasters Association.

The 2024 squad broke a program record with 46 wins last season, going 46-16 overall and winning the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Regular Season, the CACC Tournament Championship, the NCAA Division II East Region I Tournament, and the NCAA Division II East Super Regional Series all for the second year in a row to advance to their second straight NCAA Division II Softball Championships.

This year, the Wildcats became the first Wilmington program to ever win a game at an NCAA finals site, defeating Augustana (S.D.), 5-2, finishing the World Series, 1-2.  They finished ranked No. 5 in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) National Poll to end the year.

Shehorn, a Delaware native himself, took the program to back=to-back Division II World Series with a home-grown team. The 2024 Wilmington squad had 12 Delaware student-athletes on the roster.

This is the first Wilmington University team and sixth college squad to win the award since its 1999 introduction. The Wildcats join Delaware's 2003 NCAA Division I-AA champion football team, the 2005 Wesley College NCAA Division III football semifinalists, the Blue Hens' 2007 NCAA Tournament Final Four men's lacrosse team, UD's 2011 CAA champion men's soccer team and its 2016 NCAA title-winning field hockey squad.

The Wildcats will be honored during the DSBA's annual awards luncheon on Presidents Day, Feb. 17, at Riverfront Events on the Wilmington Riverfront.
