
WILMINGTON, Del. - - The Wilmington University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2024-25 season, falling 7-0 to NCAA Division I and in-state foe Delaware State on Saturday night at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
The Hornets improve to 3-4 on the year while the Wildcats drop to 13-1 overall.
The Wildcats picked up their lone win of the day in the doubles competition, as Molly Carlberg and Ming-Fu Chen won at No. 3 doubles, 6-2. But the Hornets were able to take the other two doubles matches to earn the point and take a 1-0 lead.
Ming-Fu Chen also played well in the singles matches, taking the Hornets' Camilla Mitolo the distance in the first set at No. 4. Ming-Fu Chen lost the tiebreaker to fall, 7-6, and then dropped the second set, 6-4. Gloria Barcaro was the only Wildcat to take a set from the Hornets, battling at NO. 6 singles. After falling, 7-5, in the opening set, Barcaro fought back with a 6-0 win in the second set. The Hornets' Brooklyn Bowen made it a clean sweep though, winning the third set tiebreaker.
The Wildcats play NCAA Division II in-region opponents the rest of the way, starting with a road trip to Queens on Wednesday afternoon. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
