Women’s Lacrosse Wins First Game of 2025, 24-10, at Virginia State

ETTRICK, Va. - - The Wilmington University women's lacrosse team raced out to a big first quarter lead on their way to picking up their first win of the 2025 season, 24-10, over Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon at Rogers Stadium.

The Wildcats (1-2) scored the first six goals of the game and led 7-1 after the first quarter. Virginia State (0-3) answered by scoring five runs in the second, but the Wildcats held onto a 13-6 lead at the halftime break.

Five different Wildcats scored the first six goals with Ella Royer the only student-athlete to score twice. She opened the scoring and then assisted on the second goal to Mia Schultz. Sophie Shive got on the board for the 3-0 lead before Royer's second made it 4-0 with 7:14 left. Anastasia Giannoulis scored before Alea Javorowsky scored on the woman-advantage for the 6-0 lead. The Trojans got on the board with a goal with 4:48 to play but Javorowsky capped the scoring with her second of the quarter, giving the Wildcats a 7-1 lead. Ella Royer had two goals and three assists in the frame.

A 3-0 spurt early in the second quarter gave the Wildcats an 11-2 lead before the Trojans tried to rally, scoring three straight of their own. But Javorowsky and Royer stopped the run with back-to-back goal, make it 13-5. The Trojans scored at the buzzer, going into the break with the Wildcats leading 13-6.

The Wildcats dominated the third quarter as well, not allowing the Trojans to gain any momentum. After the teams traded goals to start the third, the Wildcats rattled off five straight to take a commanding 19-7 lead.

Virginia State scored two of the first three goals of the fourth, but the Wildcats answered with the final four goals to stop any comeback bids.

Ella Royer led the Wildcats with even goals and four assists for 11 points, adding 10 draws, four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Alea Jacorowsky scored four goals and added three assists while Michaella Cook scored three goals and added two assists. Sophie Shive and Tristan Holdsworth scored two goals and added three assists each while Anastasia Giannoulis contributed two goals and two assists. Eden Ward led the defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Alea Javorowsky's three assists give her 121 for her career, tying Taylor Lambeth for the all-time program record.

Ashleigh Lawry earned her first collegiate victory in goal with two first half saves while Allison Schiavone came on and made one save in the second half.

The Wildcats have one more road game before making their home debut, as they move to South Carolina for a game at Converse on Saturday. The opening draw is set for 12:00 p.m.
