CARY, N.C. - - JJ Killen hit a walk-off two-run double in the bottom of the 11th, capping a three-run inning to come back and stun St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-8, on Saturday afternoon at the USA Baseball Training Center.
The Spartans (2-9) scored a run in the top of the ninth to send the game into extras and then scored two runs in the top of the 11th to take the lead. But an error kept the Wildcats alive and JJ Killen made them pay with a double to center field, plating two for the walk-off win.
The Wildcats led 4-0 after the first three innings on Saturday, getting a sacrifice fly from Zach Frame in the first and two-out RBI singles from Kory Pritchard, Frame, and Tristan Schoendienst in the third.
The Spartans cut into the deficit with a two-out bases-clearing double in the fifth, chasing starter Chase Fleming and making it a 4-3 game. Another two-out, two-run triple in the seventh gave St. Thomas Aquinas the lead, 5-4, but the Wildcats answered right back in the bottom half.
Brandon Grygo started the scoring with an RBI double and then Zach Frame connected again, hitting an RBI single to left with two outs to give the Wildcats the lead once more, 6-5.
A leadoff walk came back to haunt the Wildcats in the top of the ninth, although Alex Krick and the Wildcats got the next two batters out. A two-out single tied the game, 6-6, sending the game into extras.
After a quiet 10th, the Spartans struck in the 11th. A one-out triple scored the first run and then a two-out single plated another as the Spartans led 8-6.
Diego Zerpa led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk but then the Spartans got the next two batters out. But D'Angelo Ponce was hit by a pitch to keep the Wildcats alive. AJ Tropiano hit an infield popup that couldn't be controlled and Zerpa rounded third to score. Using the extra life, JJ Killen blasted a double to center field, chasing Ponce and Tropiano all the way around the bases as a party ensued in shallow center after the walk-off win.
John Klepacki got the final out of the 11th to pick up his first collegiate career victory. Chase Fleming struck out five in 4.2 innings while Liam Loging struck out three in an inning's worth of work as well.
JJ Killen went 3-for-6 with two RBI while Zach Frame went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Brandon Grygo, Kory Pritchard, and Tristan Schoendienst all had two hits as well for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats wrap up their trip to Cary, North Carolina, on Sunday with a single game against Saint Anselm. The game is set for a 10:00 a.m. first pitch.
