PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - A pair of second half goals allowed the Wilmington University men's soccer team to a 3-0 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday afternoon played at the CHC Campus Field.
The Wildcats (6-5-3, 6-3 CACC) only allowed eight shots on goalkeeper Vinny Tasca; five in the first half and three in the second. Tasca made four saves on the four shots on Wednesday. Through today's games, Tasca now ranks second in the CACC in save percentage (.800), while he is also fourth in goals against with 14 and an 1.01 goals against average.
Wilmington got on the board in the 22nd minute off the foot of Lorne Bickley, taking a shot from 40 yards out after a throw in from Sam Jester. With that goal, Bickley leads the team and is now tied for second in the CACC with nine marks on the year.
The first half ended with Wilmington putting 11 shots on goal after Bickley's goal. The second half started just like the first half ended with Wilmington putting a flurry of shots on Chestnut Hill's goalkeeper.
Play would be halted in the 69th minute with a Griffins' red card. The Wildcats wasted no time in taking advantage of the Griffins' misfortune. Twenty-eight seconds after play resumed, Fredrik Bentdal found himself on the end of some great touches between Jake Meyer and Bickley to finish a one-timed touch goal for his first of the season.
Not to be out done by his teammates, Abdul Mansaray got in on the scoring in the 86th minute. Mansaray found himself on the receiving end of a lead pass from Bickley, which left him one on one with the goalie for his eighth of the season.
The Wildcats outshot the Griffins, 28-8, in the match, including a 12-3 advantage in the second half alone. The Wildcats also earned more corners, 13-0, than the Griffins in the contest.
Wilmington's next game will be Saturday as they host Post on Senior Day. First kick is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the WU Athletics Complex.
