FLUSHING, N.Y. - - In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, the Wilmington University women's tennis team dropped its first match to an NCAA DII opponent this season, 7-0 at No. 34 Queens (NY) on Wednesday afternoon.
Wednesday started with the Knights (7-3) taking the doubles point for the early 1-0 lead. Ming-Fu Chen and Molly Carlberg won at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, but it was too little too late as the other two doubles courts were already decided with the Knights taking both matches for the point.
Ming-Fu Chen was the only Wildcat to take their singles match in a third set, battling at No. 5 singles at the end of the match. After dropping the first set, 6-1, Chen fought back to win the second set, 7-3, taking the tiebreaker, 7-3. But the Knights' Saga Berggren captured the third set superset, 10-8, to take the match.
Molly Carlberg battled at No. 2 singles, dropping the first set, 6-4, before taking Queens' Eva Rivoal the distance in the second set. Rivoal won the second set tiebreaker, 7-5, to take the set, 7-6.
Siana MacDonald did the same at No. 1 single, dropping the first set, 6-2, before fighting back in the second set to go the distance. She fell in the second set tiebreak, 7-3, to lose the set, 7-6.
The Wildcats return home for their next match, welcoming West Chester to the Delcastle Tennis Center on Thursday, April 3. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
