NEWARK, Del. – In its first home game of the season, the Wilmington men's soccer team defeated NYIT, 3-2, at the WU Athletic Complex Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats saw themselves down for a few minutes in the first half, when NYIT's Nuno Mecia scored in the 15th minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. It was not until the 23rd minute that WilmU's Fredrik Bentdal received a pass from Will Stone to put the ball in the back of the net for his third goal of the season. The Wildcats then scored two more unanswered goals by Dimitrios Topouzlis (31st minute) and Tom Garratt (44th) to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead going into halftime.
Wilmington had three shots on goal while NYIT had zero to start the second half before NYIT scored in the 55th minute to come within one of the Wildcats' 3-2 lead. The Bears had only two more shots on goal as WilmU was able to shut the door the rest of the way for the 3-2 win.
Ellis McSharry had an opportunity on goal but hit the post for the Wildcats in the second half. Will Stone also had an opportunity in the 86th minute with a bicycle kick that went just high of the net.
Vinny Tasca made two saves in goal for the Wildcats who outshot the Bears, 18-8.
Up next, Wilmington travels to Felician for an 8:00 p.m. start time on Saturday, September 15 for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup.
