
AUSTIN, Texas - - The postseason accolades continue to roll in for the Wilmington University men's soccer team, this time highlighting the outstanding combined performances of on the field and in the classroom as two Wildcats were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Men's Soccer teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Senior defender Daniel Loyo (Caracas, Venezuela) was named a Second Team Academic All-American while junior midfielder Dimitrios Topouzlis (Thessaloniki Greece) earned a spot as a Third Team Academic All-American.
The Division II Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Division II Academic All-America® teams program.
Loyo and Topouzlis were members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District I team earlier this year. Loyo has a 3.96 cumulative GPA while studying marketing and finance while Topouzlis has a 3.98 cumulative GPA in studying finance. Loyo was also an Academic All-District honoree a season ago as a junior.
Loyo was voted a Second Team All-CACC member as a central defender. He scored two goals this year, including the first goal in the Wildcats' 2-1 win over Holy Family and connected on a header off a corner kick in Wilmington's 3-0 win over Chestnut Hill in the CACC Tournament.
Topouzlis started in the first 18 contests for the Wildcats, before going down with an ankle injury in the Wildcats quarterfinal game against Chestnut Hill in the postseason. Topouzlis had two goals and one assist throughout the season, including a goal in the Wildcats 3-2 win over NYIT and a goal in WilmU's 6-0 win over Chestnut Hill.
The pair are the second and third Academic All-Americans in the men's soccer team's program history, joining Joe Woodley who was a Second Team Academic All-American in 2015.
Twenty-five of the 34 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Men's Soccer teams have at least a 3.80 GPA, with nine student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 11 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.89.
The Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division II Men's Soccer teams have three repeat performers – Kenton Keeslar (Slippery Rock University), Justin Barkow (South Dakota School of Mines and Tech.), and Michael Stewart (Oklahoma Baptist University) - from last year's CoSIDA Academic All-America® teams.
