NEWARK, Del. – Adding to their record breaking season, the Wilmington University men's soccer team earned three student-athletes to the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II Men's Soccer Teams, which are selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Senior Dimitrios Topouzlis and junior Lorne Bickley were both selected as Second Team Academic All-Americans, while senior Joe Bell was awarded Third Team for their performances on the field and in the classroom throughout the season.
Topouzlis has earned the award for the second time throughout his career, as the midfielder was awarded CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team last season. This year, Topouzlis bumped up to Second Team Academic All-America with a cumulative grade point average of a 3.99, while majoring in finance. Topouzlis is only the second Wildcat to ever earn the award twice, as softball pitcher Katie Warrington was voted to the award three times in her career.
Bickley is awarded Second Team Academic All-America for the first time in his career as a junior. The forward maintained a cumulative GPA of a 3.50 in the sports management field, while having a record-breaking season on the field, scoring single season records of 26 goals and 55 points.
Bell earned Third Team Academic All-America for the first time as a defenseman. During the season, he maintained a 3.51 cumulative GPA, while studying sports management at WilmU, scoring eight goals to go with two assists as a centerback.
All three players helped the Wildcats to an overall 17-3-1 record this season, while maintaining their highest ranked position in the United Soccer's Coaches' National Poll at No. 8.
Topouzlis, Bickley, and Bell were just three out of 33 members who were selected to the 2019 Academic All-America Teams, while being selected as one of three midfielders and forwards on Second Team and one of four defenseman for Third Team.
Colorado School of Mines' Jason Zobott was named the 2019 CoSIDA Academic All-America Division II Men's Soccer Team Member of the Year, while sustaining a 3.92 cumulative grade point average, while majoring in petroleum engineering.
The addition of Bickley and Bell now make a total of seven student-athletes that have been named Academic All-American in the Wildcats' NCAA era. Overall, the award has been given to Wilmington University student-athletes 10 times split amongst those seven individuals.
