NEWARK, Del. - - Two goals in a three-minute stretch helped separate West Chester from the Wilmington University men's soccer team on Wednesday as the Golden Rams won the nonconference tilt, 4-2, at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Wildcats (0-2-1) cut the Golden Ram (2-0-1) led in half, 2-1, in the 69th minute, but then West Chester scored back-to-back goals in the 78th and 81st minutes to regain a two-goal lead. The Wildcats tacked on a penalty kick in the 82nd second minute but couldn't get any closer as time ran out.
Wilmington outshot the Golden Rams, 6-4, in the first half but went into the locker room trailing 1-0. West Chester got on in the board 31 minutes into the contest, getting in down the right side.
The Wildcats had the tying goal wiped off the board due to an offsides and moments later West Chester widened the gap to 2-0 with a goal in the 57th minute.
Tsubasa Abe cut the deficit in half in the 69th minute as the Wildcats worked the ball up the field from a goal-kick. Theo Faillon played Jhamaleek Porter down the right side and once he got to the endline, he cut it back and played a low ball across the goal mouth. Abe was there to redirect the pass into the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
But the Golden Rams scored back-to-back goals to distance themselves once again, getting a bouncing ball in the box to land right at the feet of Frankie Taylor and then a two-touch volley outside the box by Devven Frey in the 81st minute to take a 4-2 lead.
West Chester goalkeeper Alexi Amanatidis elbowed Theo Faillon trying to shield the ball out of bounds in the 82nd minute, giving Faillon and the Wildcats a penalty kick to stay alive. Faillon buried the chance for his second goal of the year.
Faillon then had a chip shot hit the post in the 83rd minute and Tucker Gleaton hit the outside of the post in the 88th minute as West Chester held on for the 4-2 victory.
It is the first time since 2010 that the Golden got the better of the Wildcats. Wilmington was 7-0-3 against the Golden Rams in the last 10 meetings prior to Wednesday.
The Wildcats take to the road for the first time this season for their next game on Saturday. They travel to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on Gannon starting at 12:00 p.m.
