NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Playing all week in sunny Florida, the Wilmington University baseball and softball teams produced three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
From the dirt, junior pitcher Caitlyn Whiteside was named the CACC Softball Pitcher of the Week while teammate Makayla McCarthy was named the CACC Rookie of the Week. On the baseball diamond, the Wildcats' Brad Scull was named the CACC Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Whiteside (Bermuda Dunes, Calif.) appeared in five games in the circle for the Wildcats, making four starts. She pitched 27 innings, going 3-1 with 16 strikeouts on the week, finishing with a 3.11 ERA.
The junior pitcher tossed a shortened complete game shutout over nationally ranked No. 6 West Virginia Wesleyan, striking gout five batters while only allowing one hit and not issuing a walk. She tossed three scoreless innings of relief against Le Moyne before coming finishing the week with back-to-back complete game victories over Cedarville and Mercyhurst, respectively. She struck out five against Cedarville before only allowing four hits and one unearned run in a 2-1 victory over Mercyhurst.
If Whiteside didn't get the start in the circle, then it was up to Makayla McCarthy (El Cajon, Calif.) to deal. She went 2-2 in the circle in 23 innings pitched, striking out 14 with only six walks. She finished the week with a 2.43 ERA while also batting .250 for the week with five RBI.
In the circle, McCarthy finished the week strong with back-to-back complete game victories. She tossed a complete game against defending national champion and No. 9 Minnesota State Mankato, allowing four runs (one earned) on seen hits in a 9-4 win. She finished the week with another complete game, allowing five runs (one earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts in a 6-5 victory. She struck out a week's high six batters in a 4-3 loss to Notre Dame College. At the plate, she batted 5-for-20 with five RBI and two runs scored. Three of her five RBI came in a 1-for-4 performance against Minnesota State Mankato. She also came off the bench in the top of the seventh against Mercyhurst and knocked in the game-winning run with a single.
Scull (Aston, Pa.) dominated the hill once again for the Wildcat baseball team, making two starts while in Florida. He went 11.2 innings pitched, while striking out 14 batters without issuing a walk. He finished 1-1 on the week with a 3.86 ERA.
In his first outing, the junior went seven strong against Stonehill, striking out 10 batters while only allowing three hits. He did not walk a batter, needing only 74 pitches to get through seven scoreless frames. He picked up the win as the Wildcats won, 18-0. He also started against nationally No. 18 Southern New Hampshire, striking out four while not allowing a walk. He went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits in the loss.
Softball's Rosa'Lynn Burton was named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll after leading the team offensively with a .444 average. Baseball's Max Carney and Brett Nowell were also named to the CACC Weekly Honor Roll after hitting .407 and .318, respectively. Men's lacrosse's Noah Given made 23 stops in their lone game last week, earning a spot on the CACC Weekly Honor Roll as well.
