NEW HAVEN, Conn. - - Four Wilmington University student-athletes were named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Players of the Week on Monday, leading the Wildcats to more success on their respective fields this spring.
Baseball's Ryan Sandberg was named a CACC Co-Pitcher of the Week while men's lacrosse's Giovanni Marino was named the CACC Player of the Week for the second straight week. Softball's Adriana Bueno was named the CACC Rookie of the Week while women's lacrosse's Campbell Heller was named the sport's Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Ryan Sandberg (Island Park, N.Y.) started two games last week, pitching 15.2 innings, giving up only six hits and two runs. He struck out 23 batters while going 2-0. He threw a complete game shutout on Monday at Nyack, taking a perfect game into the seventh inning. He struck out 10 Warriors in the win. He then came out and struck out 13 Devils on Sunday, going 8.2 innings while only allowing one hit into the ninth inning.
Giovanni Marino (Woolwich, N.J.) has been on a scoring tear the past two weeks, and has been named the CACC Player of the Week for both. He scored 12 more goals in two games last week, adding an assist for 13 points. He scored five goals and added an assist against Felician and then came out and scored seven goals with five ground balls at Dominican on Saturday night. After scoring 16 points in the first six games of the season, Marino has scored 32 points in the last five contests.
Adriana Bueno (Oak Hills, Calif.) smashed the ball the final four games of the week last week, leading to CACC Rookie of the Week honors. She hit 7-for-15 (.467) with six of her hits going for extra bases. She had three doubles, a triple, and two home runs, collecting seven RBI and six runs scored. She slugged 1.200 with a .467 on-base percentage. She went 3-for-4 with two homers, a double, and five RBI in game two against Goldey-Beacom. She then went 2-for-3 with a double in game one against Kutztown and 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, and two RBI in game two against the Golden Bears.
Campbell Heller (Lancaster, Pa.) continues to impress, winning the CACC Rookie of the Week award for the fourth time this season. She led the Wildcats with 10 goals, 12 points, seven ground ball, and four caused turnovers last week. She scored four goals and added two assists against Jefferson, adding five ground balls and two caused turnovers as well. She then scored six goals and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers in a win over Caldwell.
Baseball's John Mead hit .529 (9-for-17) in five games to earn a spot on the sport's Weekly Honor Roll. Softball's Danielle Hess went 3-for-4 with two triples and a homer while Renamarie Rocha went 2-0 in the circle with a 2.80 ERA to earn spots on softball's Weekly Honor Roll as well. Men's lacrosse's goalkeeper Jason Roland landed on the Weekly Honor Roll as well, going 2-0 with a .786 save percentage and a 3.49 goals against average.
