NEWARK, Del. - - A five-goal stretch in the middle portion of the second half propelled the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team to an 18-12 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference victory on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
Prior to the game the team honored its lone senior, Sara LeBrun, and the left-handed attacker gave the crowd two goals and an assist, giving her 100 career points in two seasons as a Wildcat (4-10, 4-4 CACC).
The Wildcats scored the first four goals of the game, but found themselves in a battle as Post scored the final three goals of the first half to close the gap to 10-6 heading into the break.
Gabby Spalt put the Wildcats ahead, 11-6, with the first goal of the second half, but then Post closed to within 11-8 with 24:46 to play with back-to-back goals. That is when the Wildcats' offense took over.
Megan Card finished a successful clear with an unassisted goal, going right down the middle of the field for her 14th goal of the season. LeBrun then found La'Dae Boykin from the side of the goal to put the Wildcats ahead, 13-8, with 17:55 to play.
Marisa Parker caused a turnover and Mikailla Spencer scooped up the ground ball to set the Wildcats up for another scoring chance. LeBrun scored her second goal of the game and 33rd of the season on a free-position opportunity, putting the Wildcats ahead, 14-8, with 13:12 to play.
Out of a Post timeout, Card secured another draw control and Sam Foster put away her eighth goal of the season with 10:59 left on the scoreboard. Foster's goal gave the Wildcats their largest lead of the game, 16-8.
Post tried to make a game of it with under 10 minutes to play, as they scored three straight goals to cut the deficit to 16-11 with 3:34 remaining.
Despite losing the ensuing draw, Card forced a turnover and picked up the ground ball to go the other way. Foster then finished off an outstanding individual effort, splitting three defenders to put the Wildcats back on the board and end the Eagles' run.
Card picked up the next draw and Boykin finished a one-timer from Spalt to ice the game for the Wildcats, 18-11, with 1:51 to play.
Boykin led all Wildcats with five goals, adding two assists for seven points. The sophomore also added five draws and three caused turnovers. Spalt dished out a team high five assists while adding four goals for a team high nine points in the win. Card finished with two goals and three assists, but led the team with eight draws and added three caused turnovers. Foster added a hat trick with three goals on three shots for the Wildcats.
Shawna Chopko led the defense with six caused turnovers on the afternoon, adding five ground balls. Maddie Hurm made nine saves while also scooping up three ground balls.
The Wildcats have one game remaining in the regular season, as they head to Holy Family on Thursday for the season finale. The opening draw is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
