NEWARK, Del. - - Millersville scored the first six goals of the game en route to a 19-5 victory over the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team on Sunday afternoon at the WU Athletics Complex.
It is the first loss of the season for the Wildcats (5-1), tying the program record by winning the first five games of the season, set in 2006.
Turnovers hurt the Wildcats all afternoon, as they finished with 25 and only successfully transitioned from defense to offense on 7-of-22 occasions.
Campbell Heller put the Wildcats on the board with 1:07 left in the first quarter, but the Marauders (4-0) scored the final goal of the frame to take a 7-1 lead into the second quarter.
Millersville scored the first five goals of the second quarter as well, taking a 12-1 lead before Heller notched her second goal of the day with 3:20 to play in the half.
Maddie Day and Ella Baynes scored back-to-back goals in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 15-4 heading into the fourth.
Campbell Heller made it three straight with her third goal of the day, scoring to start the fourth quarter and make it a 15-5 game with 12:41 to play. But the Marauders stopped the Wildcats' momentum right there, scoring the final four goals of the game to settle the score at 19-5.
Millersville's Grace Cobaugh led the team with six goals while Amanda Juliano had four goals and two assists. Gilliam Zimmerman added four goals as well.
Campbell Heller led the Wildcats with three goals and an assist. Maddie Day and Ella Baynes each had a goal as well. Makenzie Stritzinger led with three caused turnovers while Amelie Gamache led with five draws. Marisa Swanson, Zorah Perry, and Heller chipped in with two caused turnovers as well.
The Wildcats are on the road for their next two games, closing out their nonconference schedule at Kutztown on Wednesday before starting their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference at Chestnut Hill on Wednesday, March 23.
