
CARY, N.C. - - The Wilmington University baseball team produced 15 hits and two crooked innings to get past St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, 13-2, at the USA Baseball Training Center.
The Wildcats (3-4) scored four in the second and six in the ninth to stretch the lead out against the Spartans (2-5). The runs were more than enough for Tyler Reinert and Brandon Grygo who split the innings on the rubber to secure the victory.
Tristan Schoendienst gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the second. Brandon Grygo then stretched the lead with a two-run triple to right, plating both Schoendienst and Nick Classie. Grygo then came home on a Kory Pritchard single, and the Wildcats were in front, 5-0, after two innings.
Josearmando Diaz started the fifth with a double and later came home on a Garrett Quinn single, pushing the Wildcats' lead out to 7-2.
Grygo relieved Reinert to start the fifth and didn't allow a run, leaving two on in the fifth and the bases loaded in the eighth.
Justin Hernandez hit a two-run single in the ninth before the Wildcats extended the lead with errors and a bases loaded walk. Six runs came across in the ninth inning, stretching the lead out to 13-2.
Tyler Reinert went the first four innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Brandon Grygo earned the win with five innings pitch to move to 1-1 on the young season. Tristan Schoendienst went 3-for-3 with an RBI while Josearmando Diaz went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. Kory Pritchard and Zach Frame finished with two hits each while Grygo led with three RBI.
The Wildcats have one more game at the USA Training Center this weekend, battling D'Youville on Sunday morning. The first pitch is set for 10:00 a.m.
