Wildcats’ Offense Held Down in 13-8 Loss to Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - - Shippensburg used a 5-0 third quarter to skirt past the Wilmington University women's lacrosse team, 13-8, on Saturday afternoon at the Robb Sports Complex.

It was a slow afternoon on the offensive side of the ball for the Wildcats (0-2), scoring just four goals in each half. Shippensburg (1-1) won the draw control battle, 16-7, which led to more shots, 45-23. The Wildcats also turned the ball over 24 times on Saturday, including a game high eight in the third quarter.

Goals by Ella Royer and Mia Schultz tied the game 2-2, with 4:56 to play in the first quarter, but then the Raiders scored three times before the end of the quarter to take a 5-2 lead. They made it a 4-0 run by scoring the first goal of the second quarter, but the Wildcats were able to close the gap before the break, getting goals from Alea Javorowsky and Mia Schultz. The Raiders took a 6-4 lead into the halftime break.

The third quarter told the story for the Wildcats, as the Raiders scored all five goals of the frame, taking an 11-4 lead into the fourth quarter. The Raider outshot the Wildcats, 13-2, in the third quarter.

The Wildcats tried to get back into the game in the fourth quarter, getting goals from Ella Royer, Anastasia Giannoulis, and Royer again to close the gap to within 11-7 with 4:52 to play. But the Raiders answered with back-to-back goals to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Ella Royer led the Wildcats with three goals and an assist, adding three ground balls and three draws. Mia Schultz and Alea Javorowsky scored two goals and added an assist each while Anastasia Giannoulis accounted for the final goal. Giannoulis led the team with two caused turnovers as well.

Ashleigh Lawry made 14 saves in the first half while Allison Schiavone made 13 saves in the second half for the Wildcats.

The Wildcats take a road trip next week, starting with a game at Virginia State on Wednesday afternoon. The opening draw is set for 3:00 p.m. in Ettrick, Virginia.
