WILMINGTON, Del. - - The top seeded Wilmington University women's tennis team claimed the 2021 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship on Saturday in fine fashion, defeating second seeded Jefferson, 4-0, at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
With the win, the Wildcats complete their 2021 fall season undefeated at 9-0, and have earned the conference's automatic qualification into the 2022 NCAA Women's Tennis East Regional Tournament in the spring.
As they have done all year, the Wildcats came out swinging in the doubles matches, quickly winning at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The combo of Larize Nel and Fenna Swaan won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles, and then Valentina Ivankovic and Marley Trifunovic claimed the team point with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles.
Similar to Friday in the Semifinal, the bottom half of the singles competition was where the Wildcats scored on Saturday, with clinching wins at No. 4, 5, and 6.
Larize Nel gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead with a 6-0 and 6-0 win at No. 6 singles and then Valentina Ivankovic picked up a 6-1 and 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Marley Trifunovic clinched the Tournament Championship at No. 5 singles, winning 6-4 and 6-1.
Neus Ramos Moreno won the first set at No. 1 singles, 6-4, while Jess Purdy was leading, 6-4 and 4-3 at No. 2 singles when the match was called. Begona Gomar battled back to take the second set, 6-1, to head into the third set when the match was called.
Valentina Ivankovic, Marley Trifunovic, Begona Gomar, and Larize Nel were all named to the All-Tournament Team for picking up wins in the semifinals and championships. Valentina Ivankovic was named the CACC Tournament MVP for winning at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles in each match.
