Women’s Tennis Takes Care of In-State Rival Goldey-Beacom, 7-0

WILMINGTON, Del. - - For the fourth time this year, the Wilmington University women's tennis team pitched a shutout, bageling Goldey-Beacom, 7-0, to remain perfect in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play on Wednesday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (8-0, 8-0 CACC) won all nine matches on Wednesday against their in-state and conference rivals.

Valentina Ivankovic and Larize Nel started the winning with a 6-0 victory at No. 3 doubles and then Neus Ramos Moreno and Jess Purdy gave the Wildcats the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1. Marley Trifunovic and Alva Norberg completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 2.

Jess Purdy made short work of her opponent at No. 2 singles, winning, 6-0 and 6-0, and then Valentina Ivankovic remained undefeated in singles matches with a 6-2 and 6-0 win at No. 5. Ivankovic is now 8-0 in singles matches on the year, going 3-0 and No. 3, 3-0 at No. 4, and now 2-0 at No. 5. Fenna Swaan gave the Wildcats the team victory with a 6-2 an 6-1 win at No. 6, making it a 4-0 contest. Swaan is now 5-0 in singles competition as well.

Carmelle Vial remains unbeaten in singles play with a 6-1 and 7-5 win at No. 1. Vial is now 6-0 in singles play, going 3-0 at No. 1, 2-0 at No. 2, and 1-0 at No. 3. Alva Norberg gave the Wildcats a 6-0 lead with a win at No. 4, needing a first set tiebreaker to win 7-6, and then closing the deal with a 6-3 second set. Marley Trifunovic battled back from a first set deficit, winning the second set, 6-4, to force a third set super set. The superset also went extras, as Trifunovic was able to sneak by her opponent at No. 3 singles, 14-12.

The Wildcats have one final home game in the regular season, and it comes on Saturday when they host Chestnut Hill at the Delcastle Tennis Center. The first serve is set for 2:00 p.m. against the Griffins.
