Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Earn USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Team and Individual Awards

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Wilmington University's men's and women's cross country teams were one of 10 teams to be recognized by the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference as the organization announced its academic awards for the 2018 year.

Wilmington was one of 10 CACC teams to be recognized by the association for their work on the course, but as well in the classroom. In order for teams to be eligible for the USTFCCCA NCAA Division II All-Academic Team they must have a team-wide grade point averages of 3.00 or higher.

The Wilmington University men's cross country team posted a team 3.00 grade point average as the women displayed a 3.46 grade point average as a team.

For student-athletes to qualify for the individual academic award, they must have a compiled cumulative GPA of at least a 3.25 and have finished in the top 30 percent of eligible runners at their regional championships and/or the top half of the field at the NCAA Championship meet.

Among the student athletes who received the 2018 USTFCCCA NCAA Division II All-Academic honors on the men's cross country team include, senior Johnathan Avila, freshman Garrett Checchi, senior Mark Corrigan, junior James Kennedy, and senior Miguel Suero. For the women's cross country team, freshman Rosemary Gillam received the recognition.

Overall, there were 427 teams that earned the All-Academic honors, in which 231 teams were women's and 196 teams were men's, while 649 student-athletes earned the USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
