Men Second, Women 10th as Cross Country Runs in Dense Field at NJIT Highlander Invite

NEWARK, N.J. - - The Wilmington University cross country teams competed at the NJIT Highlander Invite on Saturday with the men finishing second overall while the women placed 10th overall in a dense field in Branch Brook Park.

The second place finish was only behind NCAA DII Army, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and East Region ranked foe Caldwell by six points. The Wildcats earned 145 points for second place. The women only trailed Felician among CACC teams, finishing 10th overall out of 31 teams with 256 points.

Trent Taylor led the men with a sixth place finish, running the 8K course in a new season's best 25:48.31. Dan Wyshinski finished 20th overall with a time of 26:39.21 while Carter Sparwasser finished in 26th place with a time of 26:56.31. Chris Nelson placed 49th overall with a time of 28:01.53 while Joe Volk set a new personal best 8K time by crossing the line in 28:18.24 for a 56th place finish, rounding out the Wildcats scorers.

Braeden Peterson finished in 65th overall with a season's best time of 28:31.17 while Hayward Boutte finished in 95th place overall with a season's best time of 29:41.15. Zach Souders placed 121st overall with a season's best time of 30:36.04 while Niko Licup finished 150th overall with a another season's best time of 32:10.36.Terence Lucas wrapped up the Wildcats on the course with a 191st place finish out of 245 runners with a time of 34.29.06.

Caldwell's Tilak Datta won the men's race with a time of 25:00.12 while Army won with 34 total points.

Four Wildcats on the women's side earned personal best 5K times, as the Wildcats finished in 10th overall with 256 points. For the second time this season, Tiffany Banning set a new PR, finishing in 17th overall with a time of 19:31.88. Twin sister Sammy Banning also set another PR on Saturday, finishing in 36th pace with a time of 20:18.50. Rookie runner Amy Chomo continues to improve, setting a new PR with a time of 21:01.36, finishing in 53rd place overall.

Abby Chomo finished 76th overall with a season's best time of 22:03.44 while Angie Chomo finished 86th overall with a time of 22:29.96 to round out the Wildcat scorers. Claudia Rodriguez set a new PR on the 5K course as well, running in 22:45.17 to finish in 91st place overall to wrap up the Wildcats on the course.

Army's Lindsay Cook won the women's race with a time of 18:17.79, leading her team to the title by a point over Delaware, 35-36. NCAA DII foe Molloy finished third overall with 107 points.

The Wildcats have two weeks off to prepare for the CACC Championships on Sunday, October 27. The postseason race will be run on Belmont Plateau in Fairmount Park once again, with the men starting things off at 9:00 a.m.
