
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - - For the eighth time since 2012, the Wilmington University men's cross country team can claim itself Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champions, winning the event on Sunday with 49 points on Belmont Plateau in Fairmont Park.
The men finished first out of nine teams with 49 points while the women's squad finished a program second best third place out of 10 teams with 91 points. It is the second lowest team score for the women since the 2011 championships.
The men's squad are back-to-back champions for the fourth time in program history, going back-to-back in 2012-13, 2015-16, 2018-19, and now 2023-24.
Graduate student Dan Wyshinski led the Wildcats on Sunday, running to a second-place finish with his personal best at the CACC Championships in a time of 27:10.14. He is now a four-time All-CACC performer for the Wildcats. The 27:10.14 is the ninth fastest time in a CACC Championship in program history.
Senior Trent Taylor also had his best run at the CACC Championships in his Wilmington career, running to a third-place finish with a time of 27:24.58. Taylor is now a three-time All-CACC performer for the Wildcats.
Carter Sparwasser was the third finisher for the Wildcats, running to an eighth-place finish after improving his time on Belmont Plateau by nearly 45 seconds from a year ago. He finished with a time of 27:55.97, earning All-CACC honors for the second year in a row.
After narrowly missing All-CACC honors last year with Chestnut Hill, Chris Nelson became the fourth finisher for the Wildcats on Sunday, earning All-CACC for the second time in his career with an 11th place finish. He crossed the line in 28:21.25.
Joe Volk closed out the Championship for the Wildcats with a 25th place finish, giving the Wildcats 49 points. Running in his first CACC Championship, Volk finished under 30 minutes at 29:49.57.
Braeden Peterson improved his CACC Championship time from last season with a 26th place finish, crossing the line in 29:53.81. Hayward Boutte rounded out the Wildcats on the course with a 35th place finish, running his best CACC Championship race of his career with a time of 30:52.84.
For the third year in a row, Caldwell's Joey Datta won the CACC Championship on the men's side, beating the field by nearly a minute with a time of 26:14.70 to earn CACC Men's Runner of the Year.
On the women's side, the 91 points are the second fewest since the 2011 team earned 61 points and finished in second place. Only the 2022 team had fewer points in that span, earning 88 points while finishing third overall.
Tiffany Banning led the Wildcats with her second straight All-CACC performance on Sunday, running to a CACC personal best fourth place finish with a time of 20:34.00, nearly 30 seconds faster than last year. Sammy Banning just missed earning All-CACC, finishing 16th overall while improving her CACC Championship time by more than two minutes from last year, running in 21:35.41.
Amy Chomo was the third Wildcat to cross the line on Sunday, finishing in 19th place overall with a time of 22:10.31. Angie Chomo became the fourth Wildcat to score, finishing in 23rd overall with a time of 22:33.12 in her first CACC Championship run. Maddie Minnick rounded out the team scoring for the Wildcats with a 29th place finish, running her third CACC Championship overall in a time of 22:56.39.
Abby Chomo finished 33rd overall with a time of 23:12.43, running over a minute faster than her time from a year ago on the same course. Cassidy Burr stepped in and ran her first event of the year, finishing 38th overall with a time of 24:03.00.
Jefferson's Ana Eshraghi won her second straight CACC Championship with a time of 20:15.25, leading the Rams to their second straight CACC Championship as well.
Both Wildcat squads will now prepare for an NCAA Division II East Regional Championship on November 9. The Wildcats will head back to Rochester, New York, to run on the Matt St. James XC Trails.
