LANTANA, Fla. - - The Wilmington University baseball team wrapped up its Spring Break with an 8-0 loss to nationally No. 18 Southern New Hampshire on Saturday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
The Wildcats (3-8) collected seven hits but left six runners on base as the Penmen (9-2) scored four in the fifth and three in the eighth after taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Max Carney started the game off with a single up the middle, but a missed opportunity on a sacrifice bunt and a pick off cleared the bases as the Wildcats ended up going down in order in the first.
A one-out triple to right set up the Penmen in the bottom of the first, as they came away with a two-out single off starter Brad Scull for a quick 1-0 lead.
The Penmen opened the game wide open in the bottom of the fifth, getting to Scull for four runs. A one-out triple plated two before a passed ball brought in another run for the 4-0 lead. A ball down the third base line went for a double, scoring another run and putting the Penmen up 5-0.
Another double that just stayed fair in the bottom of the eighth scored two more for the Penmen, as they capped the scoring with a bases loaded walk for the 8-0 advantage.
The Wildcats' best chance came in the top of the ninth inning, as Christian Adorno started the frame with a leadoff single. Justin Mears hit a two-out single to put runners on first and third, but the Penmen found the final out of the game to shutout the Wildcats.
Carney, Adorno, and Dakota Graham all had two hits each for the Wildcats, as Mears came off the bench for the seventh and final base knock of the day.
The Wildcats return north to begin their traditional regional schedule. They open on the road at Shippensburg on Wednesday, March 14, at 3:00 p.m. Their home and Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference opener is set for Saturday, March 17 against Post at Wilson Field at 12:00 p.m.
