Ryan Sandberg Flirts with Perfection and Quintin Ivy Breaks the Home Run Record as Baseball Sweeps Nyack

POMONA, N.Y. - - Ryan Sandberg flirted with perfection in game one and Quintin Ivy broke the all-time home run record in game two as the Wilmington University baseball team swept Nyack in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Clover Stadium.

GAME 1:

Ryan Sandberg set down the first 18 batters he faced, but the quest for perfection was halted in the bottom of the seventh, as the Warriors started the inning with back-to-back singles. But Sandberg finished the complete game shutout, striking out 10 batters without allowing a walk. He is now 4-1 on the year.

The Wildcats (13-5, 6-1 CACC) got on the board in the top of the first as Shawn Edevane scored on an error. Adrian Jimenez hit a two-out double to center in the second inning, chasing Nic Hertzfeld around from first base. Jack McDonald followed with an RBI single up the middle, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

Erik Grady broke the game open in the top of the third, blasting a long home run to right, a three-run shot for his first career homer and the 6-0 lead.

Jack McDonald led off the seventh with a solo shot, his third of the year. Quintin Ivy doubled to restart the inning and two batters later, Shawn Haut hit a sacrifice fly to give the Wildcats an 8-0 lead. Nic Hertzfeld finished off the scoring with an RBI double to left center to score John Mead.

After the Warriors started the seventh with a pair of singles, Sandberg struck out a batter, McDonald threw out a potential base stealer at third, and then Sandberg finished it with his 10th strikeout of the game.

GAME 2:

Quintin Ivy led off the top of the fifth inning with a solo blast for his sixth of the season and 22nd of his career, breaking the Wilmington baseball program record for career home runs. He surpassed Jason Rust who hit 21 in the 2007 which still stands as the program's single season mark.

Kyle Maxwell pitched into the sixth inning striking out three while only allowing two runs, one earned, on four hits and a walk. The Warriors led off the sixth inning with a triple and an error put Nyack on the board. They later scored their second on a wild pitch.

Erik Grady stayed hot in game two, getting the Wildcats on the board in the top of the second inning with an RBI single. Scott Borgmann and Grady hit back-to-back doubles in the fourth, as Grady picked up another RBI on the day. CJ Deery followed with a single back up the middle and the Wildcats led, 3-0, in the fourth.

Quintin Ivy homered in the fifth and then John Mead hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, accounting for the final run of the game.

Erik Grady went 2-for-4 with two RBI in game two to lead the offense. Maxwell improved to 2-1 with the win. AJ Stento pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh for his fifth save of the year.

UP NEXT:

The Wildcats turn around and head to Philadelphia on Tuesday, as they play the first of a three-game series against USciences. Tuesday is also the First Round of the Bill Giles Invitational, with the winner advancing to play West Chester at Citizens Bank Park on April 19. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
